Ames Bioengineering Scientist Establishes GREEN Team After earning his Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California at San Diego, Jonathan Trent spent six years in Europe at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Germany, the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and the University of Paris at Orsay in France. He returned to the United States to work at the Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine at Yale Medical School for two years before establishing a biotechnology group at the Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. In 1998, he moved to NASA Ames Research Center, where he established the Protein Nanotechnology Group. These researchers focus on building nanostructures using biomolecules from extremophiles-organisms adapted to extreme environments, such as high temperatures, high or low pH, ionizing radiation, or saturated salts. Using these robust biomolecules, and manipulating molecular recognition and self-assembly with genetic engineering, his team has built patterned nano-particle arrays for data storage and molecular scaffolds for enhancing enzyme activities. In addition to working at NASA, Trent was appointed Adjunct Professor in the Dept. of Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California at Santa Cruz in 2004. Two years later, he was awarded the prestigious Nano50 award for Innovation in Nanotechnology, and was elected Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences. Since then, Trent has initiated Global Research into Energy and the Environment at NASA (GREEN) with support from Google. Among other projects, Trent and the GREEN team are developing systems for producing a sustainable, carbon-neutral feedstock for the biofuels of the future. Trent's recent research and inventions are focused on methods for obtaining alternative fuels, processing municipal wastewater, and economically producing freshwater by desalination. In April 2009, he organized and led an international conference in Denmark entitled: Wind, Sea, and Algae. http://www.nasa.gov/centers/ames/research/2009/jonathan_trent.html http://www.youtube.com/user/AlwaysOnVideos http://www.youtube.com/user/AlwaysOnVideos Jonathan Trent, OMEGA Project Scientist, Bioengineering Branch, NASA Ames Research Center : AlwaysOn GoingGreenSV 2012 Keynote

Join Dr. Jonathan Trent on his scientific journey to find what is New, True and Important in today's world. Jonathan D. Trent, Ph.D is the founder and director of the OMEGA Global Initiative (OGI), a non-profit dedicated to expanding global access to potable water, food from the ocean, and alternative energy, while improving coastal environments, promoting circular economies, and adapting coastal cities to climate change. He is also currently an adjunct professor at UC Santa Cruz and a civil servant scientist at NASA Ames Research Center. He has published and lectured on topics in sustainability, marine microbiology, astrobiology, and nanotechnology. Jonathan earned a PhD at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and conducted research at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry, Copenhagen University, University of Paris, Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine at Yale Medical School, Argonne National Laboratory, and NASA. He is a life-long Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences. Jonathan was recently selected by “Portrait” magazine in China to be one of their “Global 30: People of the Year for 2016" based on his work at OGI. Jonathan Trent, NASA scientist and adjunct Professor at UCSC, wanted to understand what politicians meant when they said: "We need an Apollo mission for energy" and he began "Global Research into Energy and the Environment at NASA (GREEN)." Leading an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, he investigated how tools developed for Apollo, and space exploration in general, could be applied to address some of the most pressing problems on "spaceship earth." Inspired by closed life-support systems developed for long-duration space exploration, he invented OMEGA—a system to grow microalgae, produce sustainable biofuels, clean wastewater, sequester carbon, and produce food and fertilizer without competing with agriculture for freshwater or land. The OMEGA project, supported by NASA and the California Energy Commission, is an ecology of technologies in which wastes become resources. An optimistic glimpse at the future and a reminder that we are not passengers on spaceship earth, we are the crew! This TEDxSantaCruz talk is part of over 2 dozen surrounding our theme of "Engage!" This inaugural TEDxSantaCruz event was held June 11, 2011 at the Cabrillo College Music Recital Hall in Aptos, CA (Santa Cruz County). http://www.tedxsantacruz.org/ TEDx. x=independently organized TED event. NASA Nanotechnology Scientist To provide practical answers to critical questions regarding sustainable energy, Jonathan Trent initiated a project called "Global Research into Energy and the Environment at NASA (GREEN)." This project, supported by Google, led him to investigate biofuels that do not compete with agriculture. With a Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Jonathan turned his attention to the oceans as the energy frontier for biofuels and he developed a system called "OMEGA" (Offshore Membrane Enclosures for Growing Algae). OMEGA emerged from his knowledge of the ocean, his years of training in microbiology in prestigious labs in Germany, Denmark, and France, and his knowledge of engineering from his research at Argonne National Lab in Chicago and, for the last 12 years, at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View. The OMEGA project is supported by the California Energy Commission and NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate. www.nasa.gov/centers/ames/OMEGA/index.html About TEDx, x=independently organize event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
