Dr. Jonathan Trent works at NASA's nanotechnology department, where he builds microscopic devices out of proteins from extremophiles -- bacteria that live in the world's harshest environments. It isn't the logical place to start a biofuel project. But in 2008, after watching enzymes chomp through plant cells, Trent started thinking about biofuels. And, because he has a background in marine biology, he started thinking about algae and the oceans. Thus was born OMEGA, or the Offshore Membrane Enclosure for Growing Algae. This technology aims at re-using the wastewater of coastal cities that is currently piped out and disposed into the seas. Fueled by the sun and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the algae eat the waste and produce oils that can be converted to fuel. Unlike growing corn fo...

He returned to the United States to work at the Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine at Yale Medical School for two years before establishing a biotechnology group at the Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. In 1998, he moved to NASA Ames Research Center, where he established the Protein Nanotechnology Group. These researchers focus on building nanostructures using biomolecules from extremophiles-organisms adapted to extreme environments, such as high temperatures, high or low pH, ionizing radiation, or saturated salts. Using these robust biomolecules, and manipulating molecular recognition and self-assembly with genetic engineering, his team has built patterned nano-particle arrays for data storage and molecular scaffolds for enhancing enzyme activities. In addition to working at NASA, Trent was appointed Adjunct Professor in the Dept. of Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California at Santa Cruz in 2004. Two years later, he was awarded the prestigious Nano50 award for Innovation in Nanotechnology, and was elected Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences. Since then, Trent has initiated Global Research into Energy and the Environment at NASA (GREEN) with support from Google. Among other projects, Trent and the GREEN team are developing systems for producing a sustainable, carbon-neutral feedstock for the biofuels of the future. Trent's recent research and inventions are focused on methods for obtaining alternative fuels, processing municipal wastewater, and economically producing freshwater by desalination. In April 2009, he organized and led an international conference in Denmark entitled: Wind, Sea, and Algae. http://www.nasa.gov/centers/ames/research/2009/jonathan_trent.html http://www.youtube.com/user/AlwaysOnVideos http://www.youtube.com/user/AlwaysOnVideos Jonathan Trent, OMEGA Project Scientist, Bioengineering Branch, NASA Ames Research Center : AlwaysOn GoingGreenSV 2012 Keynote

Unlike growing corn for ethanol, OMEGA doesn't threaten the world's food supply.

In this panel from the Franchise for Humanity at Stanford University on Feb 20, 2014, Panel 1 ~ Aspiration, is introduced as a prelude to the talk given by Jonathan Trent, of NASA. Other panelists include • Jacqueline Chan, Public HealthJohn Mattison, Kaiser Permanente A specialist in microbes in extreme environments, Jonathan Trent works on global solutions to energy and novel project for sustainable waste-to-energy production, Offshore Membrane Enclosures for Growing Algae (Omega). At 6:50 minutes, Jonathan talks about his transition from 'Ivory Tower' research to being a Google scholar working on what he calls 'sustainable energy for space-ship earth.' He presents his Rio2020 video on the industrial revolution and its effects on the planet. In a single lifetime, people's health and well-being have improved beyond measure.....yet 1 billion are malnourished, the planet is rapidly losing its biodiversity, increases in green-house gasses, ocean acidification, and other major changes to the planet are hallmarks of 'the anthropocene' - humankind's shaping of the planet's major systems. He feels the real question is: 'Can we shape our future?' In the US we represent less than 5% of the world's population, (vs 17% of the world's total in India and 18% in China) - yet we use 25% of the world's resources. Our current success in technology and humankind's ability to sustain 7 billion on the planet is based on an oil economy - an economy stemming from microorganisms that fell to the bottom of shallow oceans millions of years ago. But the resource is finite, and the approach is unsustainable. Jonathan's premise: microorganisms can produce new (and renewable) energy today. His floating algal mats are envisioned to convert waste-water to energy-providing biofuels. OMEGA, the practical solution modeled on this central idea, stands for Offshore Membrane Enclosures for Growing Algae. Based on life support systems work done at NASA, sustainability comes from combining algal mats with aquaculture.
